Neurosurgery is a small world. According to the last AANS comprehensive workforce study, there are only 3,600 practicing neurosurgeons in the US. Competition for candidates is extremely high. The most recent large workforce study for neurosurgery examined the neurosurgery workforce in Texas. The study indicated that 37% of neurosurgery practices in Texas were actively recruiting. In addition, there are countless hospitals recruiting these surgeons on their own because there is no established neurosurgery group to cover the hospital, or due to disagreements with the local neurosurgeons in the community.
